ABTAbout
The expertise is here. It is spread across departments that rarely meet.
Cambridge AI4S is an independent, student-run community for people who use, or want to use, machine learning in the sciences. We started in Michaelmas 2026.
§1Why we exist
What we keep seeing, and what this community is for
What we keep seeing
- Domain scientists with data and a question, and no machine-learning collaborator.
- Machine-learning students with methods and no problem worth solving.
- The same tools rebuilt in several departments at once.
- Newcomers who cannot tell which module or group to start with.
What this community is for
- One cross-departmental home for AI in the sciences.
- Learn the shared toolbox once, and apply it in your own field.
- Match domain expertise to machine-learning expertise on real projects.
- Keep a public, maintained map of groups, courses and funding.
§2What we argue
Three things we would like you to remember
01
Sort before you get excited
Most of what you read sits in the demonstrated or promised rungs. The production rung is infrastructure, and it is where AI has genuinely changed how science is done.
02
The scarce thing is not models
Results climb when someone can check them cheaply and blindly. Building a verifier or a benchmark for your field beats another architecture, and a domain scientist is better placed to do it than a machine-learning researcher.
03
The route in here is specific
A module, a project, a group and a deadline. All four are on this site, and the funding deadline is in December, not May.
§3How we run things
What we commit to
- Every session has a hands-on or data component.
- Every claim comes with a reference and a baseline.
- We discuss the promised column as readily as the wins.
- Open to every department and every level, with no machine-learning prerequisite.
- The directory stays public and maintained.

Committee and contact
We are recruiting a track lead for each discipline. If you would like to help run things, get in touch.

About this site
Cambridge AI4S is run by students. It is not part of the University of Cambridge and does not speak for it.
The daily briefing and the events list are compiled automatically each morning from public feeds, including Nature, Science, university news, research-lab blogs and talks.cam.ac.uk. Every item links to its source. Curated facts on the ladder and Routes in pages were last checked on Sun 25 Oct 2026; the official page always wins. Corrections are welcome at zd314@cam.ac.uk.
